Website Design Rule #1 - Simple and clear navigation.
Provide an easy navigation menu to your readers. They should be able to reach any page of your site in less than three clicks.
If they can't find what they are searching for, they will leave your sites for an easier one.
Try to avoid multi-tiered drop down menus and other Flash based menus. Search engines prefer text links, and it helps your search engine popularity.
Website Design Rule #2 - Avoid splash pages.
Those splash pages are the welcome page that you can see when you land on the website. They often have a flash presentation that say "click here to enter" or "Welcome to our Company" and have no real purpose for the visitor.
Instead, let your visitors what's in it for them. Hook them by giving them a previous sample of what they can find in the different section of your website.
Website Design Rule #3 - Switch off automatic audio playing.
Nothing is more annoying than landing on a website and here a sample of your preferred music. Make sure that you don't have audio that is set up to play automatically when someone lands on your site.
If the visitor don't like it or don't like to be disturbed, you will lose it and he may never come back.
If you really want to add audio (or video) on your pages, you should make sure that the reader has total control over the volume and can choose to play the audio or not.
